Mexican Independence Day marks the beginning of the movement that led to Mexico’s emancipation from Spanish rule. On the night of September 15th, 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his parish, calling on the people to take up arms, thus beginning the Mexican War of Independence.
