Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – October 10, 2025 The company that owns the vessel Marigalante informs the Puerto Vallarta community that, following a failure in its bilge system, the historic galleon sank this Friday off the city’s downtown shoreline.

The incident occurred as the crew was attempting to return to port to carry out technical repairs. Near the Buenaventura Hotel, the system malfunction worsened, and the ship began to slowly submerge into the waters that had been its home for more than three decades.

From the very first moment, all safety protocols were activated. Thanks to the immediate and responsible actions of the crew, all passengers were safely evacuated without risk.

The company extends its deepest gratitude to the maritime, port, and Civil Protection authorities for their prompt and supportive assistance during the incident. Special thanks are also extended to the local service providers who came to the vessel’s aid.

Built in 1987 and officially launched in 1992 to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of America, the Marigalante was a faithful replica of the Santa María, the ship with which Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic.

Since its arrival in Puerto Vallarta, it became a living symbol of identity, history, and pride, gracing the bay with its majestic presence and offering unforgettable experiences to millions of visitors.

Together with the people of Vallarta, the company takes great pride in this ship, which for more than thirty years stood as an emblem of joy, tradition, and beauty in our bay.

The company also reaffirms its commitment to all staff members, ensuring that no one will be left unprotected and that each team member will receive full support throughout this process.

For those who purchased tickets for upcoming voyages aboard the Marigalante, the company assures that all customers will receive a full refund of their purchase. Details regarding the official refund process will be announced in the coming days through the company’s official communication channels.

With hope and gratitude, the company is pleased to announce that within two to three months, the Marigalante’s sister ship will arrive in the bay to continue its legacy of history, excitement, and Vallarta pride.

Today, the Marigalante rests in the waters that were always her home, and she will forever remain alive in the memory and hearts of all who watched her sail.

]]>
Ahoy, pirates, listen closely, for I’m about to tell you another tale that will make you fear or respect the ocean even more.

Once upon a time, in a place where the sea roared with fury, there were some cocky young adventurers who thought they were smarter than a parrot. They dared to cross Los Arcos in a small boat, those treacherous rocks that devour the unwary who get too close.

It was said that whoever dared to cross through the center would be crushed by the wrath of the sea. But these youngsters, with more arrogance than common sense, launched themselves into the abyss and were struck down by a wave that destroyed their vessel.

The young men fought for their lives as the violent ocean repeatedly smashed them against the rocks. With all their might, they fought against the imminent drowning, coming to feel that it would be impossible to escape that fatal adventure.

Then, as they were about to drown, they felt such a deep fear of death that they set about praying with blind faith, entrusting themselves to the divine and praying with the little strength they had left.

The Miracle of the Cross in the Vault of Los Arcos de Mismaloya

When the young men thought all was lost, they spotted a school of angelfish that suddenly appeared and proceeded to follow the course of these aquatic animals.

As they followed the direction of the fish, they emerged to the surface and spotted a white cross that had appeared on the ceiling of the vault.

Shocked by this discovery, the grateful young men attributed this event of salvation to divine intervention. With great enthusiasm, they headed towards the coast to seek help, when suddenly, looking back, they came across a spooky figure.

Encounter with an Evil Being

Frozen with panic, the young men contemplated a reddish silhouette whose appearance resembled the devil himself with long horns, while his raised hand seemed to bid farewell to the visitors, welcoming them to the underworld.

Feeling the presence of this evil being, they tried to flee in terror towards land, although everything seemed to get even more complicated, as the sea, now enraged, tried to stop their plans.

After a superhuman effort, the young men finally reached the beach, encouraged by the appearance of the cross in the vault of the arches.

The Beach of Salvation

Upon arriving and feeling liberated from a demonic death, both sailors looked at each other and noticed that they were completely covered in scratches and scrapes.

Still with latent fear, they attributed their injuries to the evil power and their salvation to the divine power.

Believe it or not, this legend is widely known in the bay and among all the tourists who visit Los Arcos National Park.

That’s the end of the story, comrades. Would you dare to challenge Los Arcos like those youngsters? I can only tell you that if you want to admire the beauty of this place without risking your souls, come aboard La Marigalante.

Don’t miss the adventure!

Ahoy there, fellow buccaneers! Prepare your hooks and swords, for today we set sail for the depths of a mystery that has kept even the most seasoned sailors on edge.

In the crystal-clear waters of Banderas Bay, just a cannon shot away from Puerto Vallarta, lies a treasure that would make any pirate blush with envy. The ghost ship Golden Gate, as legend has it, holds a treasure more brilliant than the sun, a booty worthy of a true pirate. A pair of doors made of pure gold.

Old tales tell of a time when a galleon laden with pure gold sank in these treacherous waters. A galleon so peculiar that even its name was an enigma.

In the Footsteps of the Past: The Quest for Treasure

The quest for the coveted Golden Gate encountered an unexpected and terrifying obstacle. A giant fish, described with eyes as big as plates, emerges as the guardian of this submerged treasure.

Legends speak of brave divers who ventured near the wreck and returned with chilling tales of encountering a colossal grouper that has made the ship its home and guards the treasure with a fierce determination.

Sadly, others never resurfaced from the depths, lost in the inscrutable mystery of the waters.

Carlos Munguía, a renowned chronicler, adds an intriguing nuance to this maritime narrative. In one of his works, Munguía weaves a unique interpretation of the legend.

He suggests that the merchant route from San Francisco, California, to Panama, which necessarily passed through Banderas Bay, carried not only goods but also stories from distant lands that the Spaniards shared with the locals.

One of these stories could be that of the Golden Gate, renamed “La Puerta Dorada” by the Spaniards in 1769.

This connection hints at the possibility that the shipwrecked vessel bore this name, and when news of its sinking reached the coastal community, the legend of the ‘Golden Gate’ took on a life of its own, becoming rooted in the local culture and enduring through time.

But whatever the truth may be, the fact remains that the treasure lies down there, waiting to be claimed by a pirate brave and cunning enough.

And now, my comrades, I ask you, are you ready to set sail into the unknown and face the sea monster?

Perhaps it is we who are destined to unravel the mystery of the Golden Gate and claim the most coveted treasure of the seven seas.

Ahoy, mateys! Batten down the hatches and prepare for a voyage into the unknown! This October, La Marigalante sails the oceans of imagination with tales filled with terrifying creatures that dwell in the depths.

Legends of sea monsters that have made even the bravest corsairs tremble. From the terrifying Kraken to the mysterious “Gentil,” said to lurk in the waters of Banderas Bay, these beings have fueled fear and fascination in sailors for generations. Hold on tight, we’re diving into dark waters teeming with fearsome creatures!

Kraken

The Kraken, a mythical beast that has made even the bravest sea wolves tremble, arr!, is the symbol of the horrors of the deep ocean.

Its appearance varies depending on the legend that tells it, but in Norse sagas, it was described as a living island!, sailing the waters between Norway and Iceland.

They say this colossal monster swallowed entire ships, and even whales, by Neptune’s beard!

Myth or truth?

The first man to record the Kraken was King Sverre I, back in 1184, when he ruled Norway. Since then, sightings have multiplied faster than a storm at sea! The famous naturalist Carl von Linné, yes, the one who cataloged even cockroaches!, included the Kraken in his great work, Systema Naturae in 1735.

But science, alas, was not ready to accept such a creature. Pierre Denys de Montfort, a daring Frenchman, included it in his “Natural History of Mollusks” in 1801, claiming it was the largest octopus on the planet!

He drew an attack by a colossal octopus on a ship off the coast of Angola, which caused great controversy among scholars. But it wasn’t all tavern tales. There are accounts from sailors who say that “the animal’s discharges cloud the waters.”

Could this monster actually be the giant squid, the one scientists call Architeuthis dux? To this day, the Kraken remains a living mystery. Few are the certainties about its existence, but its legend persists in the minds of sailors and corsairs alike.

Leviathan

The Leviathan is a biblical monster, a terror that slithers in the dark waters of the ocean. Its name means “the one that coils,” and rightly so, for its enormous jaws and impenetrable scales have been the doom of many ships! No man dares to challenge its power, except for the divine hand!

In the sacred scriptures, only God can defeat this immense beast. It symbolizes chaos, pure evil, and represents the untamable power of nature.

In Hebrew culture, it is said that God will crush it at the end of time. Other accounts describe it as a seven-headed dragon, defeated by the god Baal in Ugaritic culture, or as the goddess Tiamat in Mesopotamian mythology, defeated by Marduk.

This monster has been a symbol of destruction and darkness for centuries. Beware of invoking its name!

Leviatán

Sirens

Deceptive creatures, half woman, half beast, sirens were feared by all sailors who crossed their domains. According to the Odyssey, they were the ones who almost led the cunning Odysseus to ruin, if it weren’t for him, with wax in his crew’s ears, tying himself to the mast to resist their charms. What cunning he had!

At first, sirens were described as hybrids of woman and bird, but over time, their image changed to that of beautiful creatures with fish tails.

In the Middle Ages, the Church associated them with carnal temptation, using their song to seduce and drag men to their ruin. But in Romanticism, they became romantic and tragic beings, as in Andersen’s tale, where a mermaid renounced the sea for love.

Today, legends about them persist, but many believe they were inspired by animals like manatees or dugongs, although the truth will never be fully known!

Ulises y las Sirenas

Umibozu

The Umibozu, that demon of the seas of Japan!, is a cursed spirit that sinks ships in the blink of an eye. It appears in calm waters, which makes it even more terrifying.

The spirit’s name combines the character for “sea” with the character for “Buddhist monk.” Legends say that these spirits may have been born from priests drowned at sea by furious villagers.

These priests would transform into ghosts due to the brutal nature of their deaths. Other stories say that the Umibōzu are sea monsters that live in the depths of the Seto Inland Sea.

Its true form is unknown, as only the shoulders upwards are seen, but they appear to be roughly humanoid in shape, with black skin and a pair of large, round eyes.

Eyewitnesses report a wide variety of sizes, from slightly larger than a ship, to a size so unimaginable that only the bulbous face of the creature is visible above the water.

If you are unlucky enough to cross paths with one, you better start praying, for there is no salvation!

The Umibozu can summon storms, create whirlpools, and sink entire ships. They can also move to destroy the ship, either by breaking the hull with a single blow or destroying it little by little.

And if it asks for a barrel, you might as well consider yourself lost! The Umibozu will use it to pour large amounts of water onto the deck, quickly sinking the ship and drowning the crew. If given a bottomless barrel, however, the creature will scoop and scoop water without achieving anything and the sailors will be able to escape.

Some skeptics say that the Umibozu are just cumulonimbus clouds, those giant clouds that seem to have a life of their own, but anyone who has experienced their fury will tell you that it is much more than a simple natural phenomenon.

Umibozu

The ‘Gentil’: The Legend That Terrorizes Puerto Vallarta

If we talk about sea monsters, we cannot fail to mention the fearsome ‘Gentil,’ that creature half fish, half man, that lurks the fishermen of Banderas Bay. With its scaly skin, sharp teeth, and eyes black as the abyss, the Gentil has sown terror for generations. Be careful if you encounter it, for its fury is implacable and its hunger insatiable!

"El Gentil"

So there you have it, mateys! The seas have always been home to incredible legends. These stories, full of mystery and danger, have traveled oceans and epochs, fueling the collective imagination of the brave who sail in search of adventure. But if there is a place where these stories come to life, it is Puerto Vallarta, a magical corner full of impressive tales that have endured for centuries.

And to experience them like never before, there is no better way than aboard La Marigalante, the pirate ship that is a living legend in these waters. Come aboard and enjoy an epic pirate show, delicious banquets, and the most spectacular landscapes. Join our crew and reserve your place on La Marigalante! Adventure awaits you, brave sailors! Ahoy!

Listen closely, my comrades, I’m going to tell you a story that will chill your blood and make your hair stand on end every time you want to venture into the deep and infinite ocean.

On the coasts of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay, an ancient legend has intrigued fishermen and residents of this region, who claim to have seen a mysterious creature nicknamed “El Gentil”, a hybrid being of man and fish that has been the object of fear and fascination for generations.

There is a place between the borders of Jalisco and Nayarit, about 10 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport, where the Ameca River empties into the sea.

This estuary is called Boca de Tomates, a place known for its restaurants serving fresh fish and a wide variety of seafood. Fishermen go there to cast their nets or hooks to catch mullet, grunts, and other species of the region.

Fishermen say that at night, when they went to collect the traps for crabs in the estuary, they heard strange sounds, not precisely from the crocodiles that inhabit the area.

Another of its peculiar features are huge footprints similar to those of a duck. Some fishermen have seen it in the distance lurking among the canoes. When they approached, thinking it was an oar thief, it turned out to be a two-meter creature that would dive into the sea or the estuary. They called it “El Gentil”.

Sightings of “El Gentil” in Puerto Vallarta

One of the stories of “El Gentil” originates in Boca de Tomates in 1950. The victim was Pancho Jiménez, a man who firmly believed in the stories told by his fellow fishermen about this enigmatic creature, as it is known that since 1930 the creature became popular among the inhabitants of Manzanillo, Colima.

It was said that people fished in the rivers instead of the sea, because a sea beast stalked them at night, causing disappearances of both fishermen and people who wandered the beaches.

According to Sabino Rhon and Tiburcio Leyva, friends of Jiménez, during a morning of fishing on the beaches of Jarretaderas and Boca de Tomates, they had an unexpected encounter with “El Gentil”. In their attempt to catch it, Sabino wounded the creature with a machete blow to the chest, causing it to flee desperately.

Other locals also claimed to have seen the enigmatic being, describing its green, scaly skin and its height of almost two meters.

The most impactful sighting occurred when Pancho Jiménez found “El Gentil” sitting on the rocks in front of the Cross of Huanacaxtle. To Pancho’s surprise, the creature still had the machete that Sabino had embedded in it years ago.

Although Pancho was presumed dead, his wife and children were informed of the situation. Days after his disappearance, Jiménez’s granddaughter began to dream of him, where he told her he was fine:

“I don’t know where I fell, or if I can return. I’m fine, don’t worry. I’m happy. I enjoy scaring people in a world of lights and reflections where, like me, everything is made of crystal”.

A month after his disappearance and after a funeral mass was held in absentia, the lifeless body of Pancho Jiménez was found on the beach.

The legend of

Sightings of “El Gentil” Indicate It May Still Be in Puerto Vallarta

The myth of “El Gentil” has spread over the years, with alleged fleeting appearances in various locations such as Quimixto, Bucerías, Mismaloya, and Punta de Mita.

The testimonies of fishermen from the town of Bucerías have fueled the intrigue surrounding this creature, as they say it comes out at night to take away the drunkards who fall asleep on the beach.

Even in the 1990s, some fishermen sighted the creature again at Boca de Tomates. This being matched the description of “El Gentil”, assuring that it emerged from the mangroves and to everyone’s astonishment, it walked along the beach carrying a dead animal. Upon noticing the presence of the fishermen, it fled to the sea.

In 2005, a security officer from the Marina of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle reported that while on duty, he found strange footprints, similar to duck footprints, except they were enormous. On one of his rounds, he caught a glimpse of a strange creature that once again matched the characteristics of “El Gentil”.

Although scientific explanations try to refute the existence of “El Gentil”, the legend persists in the imagination of the inhabitants of the Puerto Vallarta region.

Uncertainty and fear continue to surround the enigmatic being, keeping alive one of the most captivating legends of the region.

Is it just a myth or does this mysterious creature really terrorize the coasts? It’s up to you to believe or not believe, comrades.

The truth? The Margarita’s origin is shrouded in mystery, with several tales vying for credit. Most, however, involve a captivating woman (or two!).

How did the margarita came to be?

There are numerous ideas as to how the Margarita came to be. One relates a beloved American dancer in a club in Rosarito, Baja California, and the other is a drink that came to Mexico from the United States during the time of alcohol prohibition. However, the most accepted and documented is that it was the creation of David Daniel Negrete Covarrubias. Its invention took place in the bar of the luxurious Gran Hotel Garci-Crespo in the city of Tehuacán, Puebla. The year was 1934.

There, Daniel would meet Margarita Orozco, a lady whose request would transform his life. These are Daniel’s own words, in a brief interview given in 1982 in Ensenada, when he described the afternoon when one of the world’s most renowned drinks was born:

Margarita liked to sit at the bar and talk to me while I was working. On one occasion, she said:

“Daniel, I want you to prepare me a cocktail with salt. I have the habit of drinking any cocktail or drink I ask for with salt. It embarrasses me to be asking for salt all the time, especially when I am with my friends.”

Daniel took the shaker and filled it with ice. He squeezed an ounce of lime. Then took the bottle of tequila and poured an ounce and a half with the then unglamorous liquor. He finished it with three-quarters of an ounce of Cointreau, an orange peel-based triple sec liqueur. Finally, he shook to mix.

Political Connections

Another version states that the Margarita was created for Margarita Henkel, daughter of a German Ambassador, by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. Supposedly he loved to tinker with drinks, and when Henkel stopped by for a spell she was the first to try this concoction; thus he named it for her.

Ties to Texas

Some circles believe that it was, in fact, Margarita Sames (a Dallas Socialite with a home in Acapulco) who created this drink to serve to her guests when they strayed at her vacation home. Apparently it was especially loved by Tommy Hilton (of Hilton Hotels) who introduced it to his family business and so spread its acclaim and popularity.

Formerly the “Daisy”?

One of the more plausible explanations is that the Margarita is a twist on the Daisy (Margarita translating from Spanish as “Daisy”). The suggestion is that during prohibition Americans came to Mexico to drink and substituted liquors like Gin, Whisky, and Brandy with local ones like Tequila. Thus the Daisy became the Margarita!

Other Ideas

There are a few other suggestions, too; Jose Cuervo (one of the biggest names in tequila production) claims it was named after Rita de la Rosa, a Mexican Showgirl, by a bartender in 1938! Some say it was named for Rita Hayworth (real name Margarita Casino) when she was working in Tijuana in the 1940s….

And what happens with margarita frozen?

The frappé form of the margarita is an all-American creation that dates back to the early 1950s. It was then when a specific type of blender became popular for making daiquiris. Someone had a bright idea. if they could do it with the rum, sugar, lime, and strawberry-based drink, they could do it with margaritas and tequila. Thus, the frozen margarita was born.

From there, a lot of versions came. Lime was no longer necessary. Mango, strawberry, tamarind, any fruit juice mixed with tequila is now called a margarita, to the dismay of purists. But don’t worry, tequila is a generous mixer! For a golden close, here is the original and classic margarita recipe, with the signature of the very Daniel Negrete:
